How My Brother Leon Brought Home A Wife
"How my Brother Leon Brought Home a Wife" is one of the famous story written by Manuel Estabillo Arquilla. He is an Ilocano, an English writer, he was born on June 17, 1911 and he died on August 30, 1944 at the age of 33. He was born in Barrio Naghebecan, Badang La Union. Manuel Estabillo Arquilla was known for his widely anthologized short stories entitled "How my Brother Leon Brought Home a Wife and other short stories", which won the first prize in the Commonwealth Literacy Contest year 1940.
This story is all about Leon who returned to their hometown at Barrio Naghebecan together with his wife named Maria. Maria is a city girl who is loved by Leon, she shows that she really loved Leon because she was willing to sacrifice to live in a province even though she's not used to it. At first Maria didn't have an idea of how she can survive in a rural area but, she still goes and moves to the province together with her husband Leon. Maria was shocked and afraid due to the reaction of Leon's family especially the father, because the of Leon was worried about Maria's situations. Because there's a big difference in the living way between the province and the city. However, Maria didn't give up to prove to Leon's father that they are wrong and she can be able to adjust to live in a rural area.
This story emphasizes the life between the City and Province. A story showcase the different Filipino Cultures. As l read this story, l observed that the author wrote this story to express and show to everybody his own story and experiences in a Barrio Naghebecan, Badang La Union. Also, this story reminds us that we don't have a right to judge someone's capabilities by their backgrounds and physical appearance, and never give up by reaching our dreams, just like how Maria did.
